William Faulkner is referred to as a modernist writer. This is clearly expressed in the intricate technique used in his masterpieces, such as The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying, but he began the technique even before becoming a novelist. Faulkner wrote romantic poetry early in his career, and Margaret Yonce recognizes the technique even in “The Lilacs,” one of his earliest poems. However, Yonce does not analyze the personal pronouns, which are used extremely ambiguously in the poem. In this paper, by identifying the antecedents of the pronouns, I will clarify the structure of the narration, which is the origin of the structure of Faulkner's novels.

John Keats’s “Sleep and Poetry”, the closing poem in his very first collection, Poems, is a significant work in that it reveals Keats’s poetic world and ambitions. It is in this first step toward becoming a great poet that Keats strives to immerse himself in “the agonies, the strife of human hearts”, as he passes through the realm of Flora and old Pan and abandons the joy of sleep. Placed adjacent to “poetry” in the title, “sleep” is a major element of imagery, the understanding of which is critical to the appreciation of “Sleep and Poetry”. To use the words of E. de S?lincourt, Keats develops in this work “the contrast between the experiences of the unawakened and of the awakened mind”. Studies have traditionally centered on the simple contrast between the two, with an emphasis on “poetry” rather than “sleep”. This paper, however, will focus on “sleep”, treating it as a manifestation of Keats’s inner world that is integral to his notion of “poetry”. To Keats, “sleep” was much more than a mere physical rest. It signified his intoxication, his inclination for death, and finally his self-destroying “Negative Capability” which holds the key to Keats’s poetic imagination. In fact, it might even be argued that elements closely connected to “sleep” are the seeds to understanding Keats’s later great poems.

The Japanese language education in overseas territory started, first time in history, in Taiwan as a national policy. It is already over a century since then. For the initial 50 years, the Japanese language education was made as a colonial mother tongue. In the beginning of next 60 years, the Japanese language education has been suppressed by Taiwan government until Taiwan is democratized and the Japanese language education in Taiwan is normalized. On the contrary, due to the recovery and the prosperity of Japanese economy after World War II, Japanese language education has been wide spread all over the world, and currently enormous number of people are studying the language. The purpose of this paper is to examine the change, the status quo, and the prospect of Japanese language education policy at university in Taiwan.
